Too much or too little?

I’m going to need to reduce my workload this fall so one thing I’m contemplating is reducing the frequency of my posts and newsletters.  As I began to consider this I realized that most of the comments from those who have unsubscribed (thankfully there have been few) is that there are too many emails.  Then I began to wonder if more people feel this way and that this reduction might actually be appealing to more people.  So I have two questions for you today.

First of all:  Currently I post one recipe and send out one newsletter per week.  Would you prefer only one item per week- alternating a new recipe with a newsletter topic?

Secondly: Maybe I overwhelm people right at the outset when they subscribe to my newsletter.  I send a link for the bonus recipes, and then a segment of the four-part e-course once every four days (plus the regular weekly recipe and newsletter).  I could see that this might feel a bit much to some.   My husband suggested that I might just want to offer a link to the e-course in a single email.   Or I could wait longer between each segment of the e-course.

I’d really appreciate any feedback on these questions as my simple goal is to provide help and encouragement (not to overwhelm folks!).

My input would be – once a week newsletter containing a recipe IF it strikes your fancy, or do a recipe of the month on the first newsletter of the month. I think one email a week is plenty, considering all the other emails we deal with. Pairing down your schedule and spending more family time should be a top priority.
Thanks for all you do Kim!

  2. Amber says:

I think a single email link for the e-course would be helpful. I personally need constant reminders so I’m okay with frequent emails. However, I can see getting overwhelmed or the importance of each getting lost due to frequency. I am a recipe fiend, I seek inspiration for what others are making so I wouldn’t want you to decrease the frequency of those! I’m really glad I found your site because your recipes have been easy to duplicate and alter and use ingredients I already have in my pantry! Thanks for all you do :)

  3. Mary Langford says:

I agree with your husband. Do a link to the e-course. I like getting the one recipe and one newsletter per week; however, to accommodate others, consider combining, i.e., maybe one newsletter every week with a link to a recipe (or two)! Or vice versa, send a recipe (or two) every week with a link to a newsletter. I love the recipes! Thank you for all you do for us. I truly appreciate you!

Hi. I think the way it is now is the perfect amount… If ppl don’t want to read something, the delete button is there. I don’t like watching videos, I prefer reading. I don’t unsubscribe to lists because they send out videos. I just take what I like and delete the rest. Easy!

  5. Mary Schickling says:

It’s not that difficult to delete e-mails that you might not
have need of.But I enjoy your recipes and health tips.I save
them and forward to friends and family when they are open to
diet changes. Thanks for all you do to make this information
    available. M.S.

  6. Melanie says:

But I understand if you are busy with family and other commitments. What a bunch of strangers over the Internet think really doesn’t matter. If you need more time for yourself, take it. If you are zealous to share your knowledge, then go ahead, there will always be people out there interested in what you have to say.

  7. Tobye says:

I would be happy with one e-mail a week and alternating news and recipe might work out just fine. I always appreciate keeping e-mails to a minimum and I keep very few subscriptions because of this. Thank you for being aware of this issue and trying to find a plausible solution!

  8. Martianne says:

I have no problem with how you do things, but considering when life is busy, maybe:

one item per week, alternating, as you suggested

a link to the full e-course with a second email a month later with the link for those that lost it, just in case

  9. Niki says:

    Hi Kim,
I really enjoy your posts and emails, but I think alternating a recipe with the newsletter is a great idea. Also, for new subscribers I agree with your husband about offering the e-course in a single email.

  10. Theresa Mulhern says:

I have enjoyed what you have sent, but I’d rather have info on one email (the recipe and newsletter together). Yes, at first it does seem like you are sending too often and made me think one, oh know I better unsubscribe. I decided to wait and see if it slowed down and it did.

I do like all the great info though!

  11. Barbara says:

    Dear Kim,
I like the alternating idea: sending out one email a week. I think your introductory emails are just fine. One option is to have a check box to ask peoople if they want your e-course when they sign up. But, I appreciated them. It was helpful to understand your eating philosophies. I especially appreciated the smoothie recipe and the bread recipe. Those are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. Awesome, also, that you have such a supportive hubby. :)
    Sincerely,
    Barbara

I am so blessed by what you share. I just recently discovered your site and signed up for your newsletter. You have an abundance of wonderful information to share with others and I am so thankful for your willingness to do so. I have the e-mails “saved”, as it is taking me quite some time to absorb it all. I admit that there are times when I momentarily “groan” when another e-mail arrives from you, as feelings of being overwhelmed arise. That said, I know it can sit and wait until I’m ready to read through it and focus on the content. And, I am always so blessed and encouraged by what you are sharing.

It would be nice to have one e-mail with the link to the e-course. And I, personally, would like one e-mail per week.

Thank you, again, for all you so willingly share with others. You are a precious blessing and an answer to prayer ~ Joanie

  13. Kathi says:

I agree, at first when I signed up, the first week or so was overload. Every time I opened my email account it seemed like there was more of them and I just did not have the time to fit them all in and give them the justice they deserved.

Now, twice a week isn’t a bother, but I also understand the advantages of once a week for the sender. So if once a week it needs to be, then let it be so. Your information is too valuable for us to just lose it all together.

Therefore thanks for all your efforts.

  14. jennifer says:

Maybe less would be more. i haven’t had time to look at one e-mail yet, but have received about 5 or 6. a little much, even for me who is deeply involved in researching about natural health. thanks!

  15. paula says:

    Hi Kim -
I made your recipe for the millet brown rice soaked skillet bread and my daughter liked it and asked for it again.
Since then this is the first email from you I have actually read. But, I am planning to get to the others by and by. I have over 400 emails in my inbox…
What I am actually interested in is gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian recipes.
I would like to see one new recipe a week. That would be very helpful.
I have not checked out your web sight yet. I have noticed that in the Nourishing Meals web sight I can look up most anything and read further when I have the time and inclination.
Maybe your additional information can be linked through that instead of the emails.
I just remember I did watch a little 5 minute clip with before and after pictures. Nice improvement.
In summary I do appreciate you offering your tested recipes and wish to thank you for those.
    Thank you!
    Paula

Having just joined up, I can say I like the idea of a single email with links to the e-course.

  17. Angela says:

I think offering a single link to the e-course sounds like a great idea. Best of luck in your journey to find balance.

  18. Mary Denton says:

Every other week with e-mail/recipe coming together.

As for the e-course. I really liked the way you did it. But you could give people the option (e-mail or web link) when they sign up. Also, I didn’t mind getting it 4 consecutive days – but you could space them (3 days apart?)if that seemed to be a problem for some people

  19. Tina Palmer says:

    Hello,
I am fine with the mailings as they are. With that said,
if so as not to overwhelm yourself you need to cut back
    that would be ok, too.
Thanks for all you do in giving information to help me
and my family live a healthier lifestyle.
    Tina

  20. Isabel says:

I like it the way it is. If I am too busy to read it right away, I can file it for later.

  21. Dear Kim,
In answer to your latest newsletter- entitled “Too Much or too Little”.
I LOVE your newsletters. I do have to admit that I have not read all of them yet- as our little ministry got REALLY busy right after I found your website recently- but I do love what you write.
It is informative and helpful for someone like me- who wants to eat healthy, but doesn’t have the time to do the research myself.

In fact, am praying for God to send the money into us- we live on donations- so that I can buy all of your books! I eat vegan, mostly raw, and gluten-free, so I just love your recipes. They are like a breath of fresh air and sunshine to a thirsty, hungry soul!

Your soaked grain ones are my favorites, but I made the hummus recently- adding a piece of roasted red pepper- and it was out of this world delicious!

Keep up the great work- and I will pray that God allows you to find the time that it takes to accomplish all that you have to do- as I know that you are helping many others as well with your recipes and research!

(I have written a lot of my own recipes, but I cannot be bothered writing a book, even though I have been asked to do just that!)

    God bless you,

Hi Kim, I agree with your husbands suggestion on offering the e-course in a single email. And as far as the newsletter/recipe question, couldn’t you offer the recipe in the newsletter? That way it’s just one email a week but we get both! Thanks for all you do. I’ve learned so much from in my transition to plant-based wholesome eating! Have a blessed day!

  23. I recently subscribed, and I did find it a little overwhelming to my inbox to receive so many emails in that time space. I like your husband’s idea of a single email with a link to the e-course. I did enjoy and benefit from everything you sent, but it was overwhelming.

    Thanks!

  24. Lynne says:

I like the suggestion of a link to the course. I recently signed up for your emails and have to admit my thought was “oh, no, another of those sites that will send more emails than I can deal with. I don’t stay with them long, even those I like. The info has been welcome, less frequently would work well for me. Thanks for asking.

  25. Lynne says:

I really like the comment – a link to the course. I don’t stay long with the frequent email sites, even those I like. Since I recently subscribed, found it a bit overwhelming. Thanks for asking.

  26. paula riviezzo says:

I love it all but have limited time to read all of the emails I get. So, one item a week might be better.

  27. Barbara says:

I am new to your blog, book and emails and so maybe that is why I am still very happy when I see your name in my email inbox. If you cut back to one email a week, that would be fine, too. I get recipe guilt after seeing so many pile up that I liked but haven’t tried.

  28. Cynthia says:

I think John’s idea in secondly is excellent. I like getting a recipe every week. I also like the encouragement the newsletter provides.
    thanks
    Cynthia

  29. Deborah Schumacher says:

    Hi Kim,
Love the info you send. I think the frequency of the emails is great..

Whatever you can send is appreciated :)

    Thank you,
    God Bess,
    Deborah

  30. Tracy McGonis says:

I think 1 item per week would be good.

  31. Meta Pope says:

Kim, you do not overwhelm me. I look forward to anything and everything that you send us. You do need to take care of yourself first. I am with you what ever you do as long as you stay in contact with us. Do what ever you need to do just stay in contact with us. Meta pope

  32. Kathy says:

I am not bothered by the frequency of the blogs. I enjoy reading them when I have the time and I am interested in the topic.
    Thank you!

  33. Megan says:

    Kim,

    1. I think two a week is fine.

    2. I think the e-course you send out is excellent. I have encouraged many of my friends to subscribe to receive it. I did not feel overwhelmed by it. Very encouraging and empowering!

  34. Jennifer Hesse says:

Hello! I just signed up recently for your newsletter, and I personally think one email with a link to the e-course would be helpful. I haven’t had time to read through everything you’ve sent, and the emails are getting buried in with a lot of other stuff. I was surprised at how many emails I received from you, so I personally would like fewer — maybe one per week, as you suggested. I am glad to know you’re there as a resource, and a weekly newsletter would be helpful to keep your materials in my mind without overwhelming my inbox. I hope you take those comments with love! :-)

    Thanks for all you do!

    Blessings,
    Jenn Hesse

  35. Theresa says:

I’m a new subscriber and I’ve been fine with the emails. If you need to cut your workload down could you include the recipe in with the newsletter and that way you’d have the one mailing?

I like the recipes and wouldn’t want to go to one every 2nd wk.

    Thanks,
    Theresa

  36. Tara S says:

I would just set up a link, if new susbscribers wanted to look, though I probably wouldn’t have if you didn’t just send them out. I have only read 1 or 2 of the four, though. Or maybe, just send those out with the bonus recipes, explaining when that is done they will get the weekly email and recipe. I do think you could put that in one email, also. One less thing for you! Thats what we all need!

  37. Glo says:

I think the problem with number of emails is because you send out the same info under several addys so if someone is signed up for Wholemade, Simply Natural Health, Daily Bites and your book site it will fill your in box very quickly (especially when you were doing promo for the new book)and it fills up Facebook too with deplicate entries. Without missing any very useful info is there a way to combine into one? Would give you more family time and R & D time :)
    Enjoy your recipes.

  38. Kim Wilson says:

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestion. I think I’ve got it reduced now.
